Homework
Homework is an important part of school. Homework is necessary to practice skills that are being taught during school, or provide one to one help with skills a child is struggling with. Please take this opportunity to practice responsibility and organization. Each child in first grade will need guidance with these two very important life skills from his/her family. Try to figure out a schedule at the beginning of the year that works for your family. Homework is part of school life, please set good practices at home now. Making homework a priority now will help your family get into the routine and make it a positive part of the school experience.
I will send Home School Connection letters at the beginning or each math unit, so you will know what we are working on. These also give examples to practice with your child at home. There will also be Homework and Practice pages to help your child review the lesson taught at school. This paper should be completed at home and returned the next day. It should come home in the Return to Mrs. Good pocket of the “Smile Face Folder.” Your first grade student should do the homework. Not another family member. Help may be needed, but your first grader should write on the papers. Please use pencil for all homework.
Spelling words will come home on Monday. Please practice these words at home during the week. Practice spelling test will be on Thursday. Our graded spelling will be on Friday.
Your child will bring home a book in a zip bag. It is to be kept in the Return to School pocket of the Smile Face Folder. Please listen to your child read this book every evening. These books are decodable books. They allow your child to practice the phonics skills that are being taught in the classroom. If this book is easy for your child to read, they can work on fluency and expression. Ask your child comprehension questions about the story as he/she reads it. Your child should be able to retell the story when they are finished reading it. Focus on characters, setting, and sequence of events.
